Where is the best place for a family to stay in bangkok?

I am staying in Bangkok for three days with my family, including two young daughters. Where would be the best area for us to stay in, we would like to visit the old city, but also like shopping and eating out. I am just not sure which area would be a family orientated area and not a 'girly' area.
