How do you put your older baby to sleep? How do you get them to stay asleep?

I am having trouble figuring out the right way to put her to sleep, and stay asleep. Her crib is next to my bed. I sometimes rock her, and sometimes I lay her in bed next to me until she falls asleep and then put her into her own bed. She used to sleep through the night but she wakes up in a couple hours and stands in her crib and cries for me. I will lay her back down in her bed and pat her back and then she get very upset. She is 10 months old, but I still hate to let her cry it out. I have tried to let her fall asleep in her own bed but it seldom works that way. Once in a while she will drift off on her own but not very often. What can I do? What am I doing wrong?
