Which quilt should i make for my first quilt?

So im doing this all by hand. Not very smart I know and by the end ill probably be blind but its worth it. Anyways its for my nephews birthday he will be one. I hope to have this project done by February but ill need some advice and well should i make a alphabet quilt or just a regular block quilt and i know ill need clothe and lots of it but what else do i need other than needles and string?
